Saturday's 35-27 exhibition victory

Jahvid Best played one series, broke two big plays and left the Lions feeling warm about their running back situation. DeAndre Levy and the defense weren't as lucky.Best had the Lions' biggest offensive highlight in Saturday's 35-27 exhibition victory over the Cleveland Browns, sprinting 51 yards on Detroit's first play from scrimmage to set up a Matthew Stafford-to-Bryant Johnson touchdown.

He left two plays later with tightness in his legs, and while coach Jim Schwartz said that move was precautionary, the Lions did suffer one potentially serious injury on the game's first snap when starting middle linebacker DeAndre Levy left with a pulled groin."I don't know how long that will be or anything else until we get some tests on him and stuff like that," Schwartz said. "But he wasn't able to play after that."

The Lions can't afford to lose Levy, who's also battled a back injury this preseason, for any length of time. They're extremely thin on defense and struggled defending the pass Saturday for the third time in as many games."I think we took a step back from last week," said safety Louis Delmas, who played two series in his preseason debut.Stafford finished 13-for-17 for 141 yards, and he and most of the rest of the Lions starters played into the second half. I'm not the kind of guy who can sit around role playing with a group of people for a long time. I did it when I was younger, and as fun as playing pretend may have been, there just wasn't enough structure for me to enjoy it. So when I talk about role playing games, my definition's going to be browser-based and relatively interaction-free, though not to the point of complete isolation.I have two online games that I play on a regular basis. They're both free, and - so long as you're into the respective themes - they're both quite fun.

I've mentioned this one quite a few times in my previous articles, but I really must continuously reiterate that this game is a lot of fun. Fans of anime - Naruto in particular - will love it. You take on the role of a genin, a newcomer ninja at the very bottom of the ninja world, and you must work your way up in strength and influence by completing missions, gaining experience and finding new allies and items. Everything is performed via vast menus filled with buttons.

That in and of itself sounds kinda boring, I'll admit. In practice, though, it works really well, since the menus are bright, attractive and filled to the brim with neat little graphics: all of your allies have their own little portrait, and you can import a picture for yourself that others can see. This is doubly fun since Billy vs Snakeman is basically an enormous parody of Naruto and a flurry of other animes (Bleach, Death Note and Gundam are just a few of the ones you'll come across), and features a slew of satirical and funny missions based on pop culture of all kinds.

More, you'll get a lot more out of this browser-based game than most. Once you get strong enough the average Billy vs Snakeman session will take up to an hour to get through, whereas most similar games will only last you a couple minutes. Considering it's free and can be played anywhere, that's pretty good.My other favorite browser-based game, Urban Dead is all about zombies. You're given two options when you begin the game:- You're a survivor of a pre-determined occupation (civilian, military, doctor and so forth) who's trapped in the suburbs of Malton in the midst of a zombie outbreak. You must fight to survive.- You didn't survive. You're a zombie. You must hunt down survivors and eat them.

Whichever route you choose, you're placed on a game grid that you can move around on (each action takes up one action point, and you get fifty max) and you must attack the opposing side with everything you've got. Zombies have it a bit easier in this regard: survivors need to hide in buildings and can run out of ammunition fairly easily, whereas zombies will just get back up if you kill them. Whichever side you choose (and you can criss-cross between them) you're sure to have some fun. Normal 0 7.8 磅 0 2 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 WoW Gold

June's Electronic Entertainment Expo

This year started with James Cameron's 3D blockbuster Avatar crushing box-office records and setting off a 3D craze in the film industry. The gameworld has also hopped on the 3D bandwagon, with Nintendo unveiling its innovative three-dimensional portable, the 3DS, at June's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Sony's own 3D efforts have been substantial this year as well. The company released a line of 3D-enabled televisions, and in June unleashed a firmware update that allows all PlayStation 3s to play select games in 3D. And looking forward, PS3-exclusives Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 will feature 3D support, allowing anyone with a special TV access to the stereoscopic gaming view.

GameSpot caught up with the Sony executive in Germany at Gamescom 2010 to talk about the company's recently launched line of 3D-enabled televisions and 3D gaming efforts. Hocking discussed everything from how his company aims to bring 3D TVs into consumers' living rooms, to why they should be there, to how gamers are going to pave the way.GameSpot: How do you view the market currently considering that a lot of people have just invested in an HDTV within the past couple of years?

Mick Hocking: I think that's a good point. From our point of view at PlayStation, we think games are probably going to be the killer content for 3D, one of the big market drivers. I think this year is year zero for 3D in the home. We've launched the TVs this year, all the PlayStations out there are currently upgraded to support 3D gaming, so that's potentially 36 million PlayStations out there that can play 3D games. But of course we need people to go purchase 3D TVs. So our job at the moment--as is the job of the sports broadcaster, the film industry, and other industries--is to get people to purchase 3D TVs.

It is a challenge because people have been buying HDTVs the past five years, so it's really crucial that we can deliver experiences which are good enough and compelling enough to make people make that purchase decision and upgrade to a 3D television. And I think what's encouraging is it's not just the games industry that's pushing it. Obviously we have 3D Blu-ray movies coming, and a lot of them in production, so the next few years you're going to see an awful lot of 3D movie content as well as a lot of great 3D games. We have more than 20 3D titles coming out in the next 12 months, and you'll see that [figure] grow rapidly. But also I think there are other drivers.

Sports is going to be a big factor. Companies like Sky are now really getting to grips with how to deliver 3D sports content, and that's going to be huge. Once people see sports well in 3D, that'll be a big driver for purchase decisions. And I think in addition to that there's also personal content. You're going to be buying a 3D camera, the next time you buy a digital camera. Camcorders are coming out, so you'll be taking movies of your family in 3D, and you'll want to view all this content at some point on a TV. So I think we're going to see it grow and grow and grow over the next few years.

GS: Is it fair to say Sony's current involvement in 3D is sort of an investment in the technology? So that when the TVs do become more common you guys have a vast track record to draw from in terms of game development?

MH: Yeah. I think one thing that's unique about Sony is that we're the only company in the world that has the entire hardware and software chain for 3D within our core business. We are making a big investment into [3D] and we do believe 3D is going to be very popular and will be a growing technology. But it also means that with our 3D games team that we have in the UK, we look after all of the 3D worldwide. But we talk to the guys in Sony Pictures a lot about the latest techniques, the latest technical solutions, in 3D. We talk to the guys in cybershop, we talk to the broadcast areas of the company, and because we're doing that we can pool our knowledge and experience and make sure the content that we produce is at the highest possible quality.

Browser-based streaming games

Browser-based streaming games developer InstantAction has revealed Instant Jam, its free-to-play, embeddable 3D music/rhythm title that users can play online with their own music libraries.

The game is similar to console music games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but players can play Instant Jam for free using either their computer keyboards or USB-based guitar controllers. They can challenge their friends, earn or buy virtual goods that enhance gameplay, and more.

Users can play songs from their own music libraries, as Instant Jam has thousands of note charts that it can match with players' songs. If they see a particular tune on the playlist they don't own, they can buy it on services like Amazon or iTunes to access the track in the game.

The developer says Instant Jam's catalog, which includes "the world's most popular songs", already has more supported tracks than all other music game franchises combined. InstantAction plans to add dozens of new notecharts/songs to the game each week, too.

Instant Jam will be available to play on Windows PCs first, then on Macs and Flash afterward. Users will also be able to copy and paste an embed code onto their blog and other sites, allowing their friends to play the game outside of social networks or its standalone site.

The game is the first title out of InstantAction's new Las Vegas branch, which employs a number of Westwood Studios/Electronic Arts Los Angeles veterans who worked on titles like Command & Conquer, Boom Blox, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth I & II, and many more.

"We created Instant Jam because we believe people should be able to play along to any song from any band or genre they like, rather than be confined to a handful of pre-set songs chosen for the game they're playing," says InstantAction CEO Louis Castle.

Castle adds, "We also strongly believe that games, like other forms of entertainment media, should be easier for consumers to discover, try, enjoy and share. Instant Jam embodies all of this and provides music lovers with a powerful new way to interact while experiencing their music."

an interesting destination

Cadore is a land filled with sensational natural landscapes in the Dolomites area, declared a World Heritage by the UNESCO in 2009 in the name of its uniqueness: immerge into nature!Among the touristic mountain destinations in Italy, Cadore is no doubt one of the most renowned and beloved: many people choose a hotel in San Vito in Cadore for their holidays, thus getting into the atmosphere filled with history and nature that characterizes the whole area.

Nature obviously shows off with the marvellous Dolomites, so called for their geological conformation, in which Dolostone or Dolomite rock is predominant, a sedimentary carbonate rock so called after Déodat Dolomie, who observed it in 1791 and revealed its characteristics. For you holidays on the Dolomites, the apartments in Cadore will offer you a base to rest after the numerous excursions that you can do during your day, in the woods or in the nice towns in the mountains that offer to the tourists typical objects and dishes of the place.

History, instead, tells us about the facts happened in a frontier area like Cadore, which borders with Austria, Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia: with some excursions on the Dolomites you’ll be able to see the places where during the Risorgimento many battles have been fought for the independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, thus making the Cadore area enter into the Italian territory. During the First World War as well Cadore was a hot area: the trenches used by the armies are still visible, together with the shrines dedicated to the memory of the fallen soldiers; these are suggestive places immerged in an atmosphere in which the peace, now, amplifies their beauty.

Hence, Cadore reveals itself as an interesting destination not only during the winter holidays, during which, anyway, it offers to the winter sports lovers wonderful chances to practice ski, snowboard and other disciplines on the snow, but also during the summertime: it refreshes you from the hot summer days, and its landscapes are unmissable during the whole year, either covered with a snow blanket or enlightened with the summer sun. The mountains during the summertime are made for walks and relax, to breathe fresh and pure air and regenerate far from the stress of the city, with no occupation but the walks through the woods or in the town.

Nature rules all year long, and is the main protagonist in every day out: breathtaking landscapes of Cadore fill the eyes of all those who choose it as their holidays destination and are, after all, the reason why they choose it. The various activities gravitate around nature, and beat the rhythm of the year by following the rhythms of nature, and following these rhythms the lovers of the various disciplines arrive in Cadore: skiers during the winter, walks and trekking lovers during the spring and the summer, mushrooms lovers in autumn. In conclusion, there’s enough for everyone: Cadore attracts everyone for its nature, for its history, for the sun, for the snow and, at the basis of all this, there’s a beauty unique in the world.

a European GDC

Game Developers Conference Europe 2010 runs this week in Cologne, Germany, and it aims to offer the region's developers both the opportunity to network and collaborate on local issues as well as interface with a wider global forum. Remedy's Mattias Myllyrinne and Crytek's Avni Yerli sit on the advisory board of the event, organized by UBM TechWeb Game Network (parent of this website).

"I think Europe is a strong and vibrant development community and has a lot of good development clusters that are growing -- and very competitive," says Myllyrinne, director of Finnish Alan Wake and Max Payne developer Remedy."I think it's only natural we have a European GDC to match that -- some of the challenges we face are going to be local, and of course we operate in a global industry with, hopefully, a wider audience for a lot of the things we do."

Among these local challenges: "Compared to North America or Japan, most of us don't have a vibrant domestic market for our games... hence, naturally, we need to go international from the get-go. If you're based in the states, you're probably not that far from your mass audience, or your publishing partner."Digital distribution and increased globalization has reduced these recent challenges in recent years, but it's still something all European studios must consider.

Some of Europe's communities have historically lacked a wide range of disciplinary specialties, Myllyrinne adds. Speaking at least from a Nordic perspective, he notes, "we have a very strong background in terms of programming and engineering, and I think we're fairly good in the traditional game design side of things -- but for example, we didn't have the history of animation that [the U.S. does] in California," he says. "These are skillsets that we seek to learn from North America."

But Myllyrinne sees enormous growth in the European industry. "At least from what we've seen, when I'm looking at technology and I'm looking at innovation, I think a lot of good games and a lot of innovation is coming out of Europe," he says, pointing to refreshing ideas like UK-based Media Molecule's Little Big Planet or Swedish DICE's Battlefield and Mirror's Edge.

"I think we're facing a lot of change," he adds. Crytek's Yerli agrees -- and, perhaps surprisingly for a developer known for its AAA titles like Crysis, he says that much of this growth is being driven in the social games space."The biggest growth in Germany has been in the social gaming market," says Yerli, one of the Turkish brothers who co-founded the Frankfurt-headquartered Crytek. "We see a potential future in the social space because it's a very dynamic environment. It's very interesting how the evolution of the industry is going on, and how core gamers are attracted to that... it's an area where we are looking very closely. "

Social gaming is one of the areas where Europe can learn more from North America, suggests Yerli. Conversely: "Based on the developments going on, I think Europe is pretty much ahead in terms of 3D," he suggests. "Interestingly, I think that will also be very marketable going down the road."

European developers are also innovating in other emerging markets, such as mobile and downloadable, as Myllyrinne points out: successful Xbox Live Arcade title Trials HD was developed by Helsinki-based RedLynx, PlayStation Network hit Super Stardust HD was created by another Finnish studio, Housemarque, and iPhone chart-topper Angry Birds was also created in Finland by Rovio.

So with 3D, emerging markets and upcoming opportunities in motion control, says Yerli, it's all the more important to have a forum in Europe for the region's developers: "A lot of European developers don't have the time to travel to the U.S. [for main GDC] and deserve a high-quality event in Europe," he says.

"A huge amount of developers can attend, network, train and get inspired. The industry itself is the format, which is exciting... I think we have managed to formalize a program that's actually very well balanced," Yerli adds. "It's a very wide offering, and it targets the right group of attendees.""From my perspective, it's a tentpole event in Europe where you get to share a lot of insights with other developers," adds Myllyrinne. "The key thing is being able to share ideas with folks, and everything around that is kind of secondary to the fact you have all these great people come together."

Smack bang

Apart from being a growing attraction for overseas tourists Baguio City in the Philippines is a big favourite amongst the Filipino people for holidays and for it’s great local products. Smack bang in the middle of a rain forest, the city is 1500 metres above sea level with a cooler climate than the rest of the Philippines. However, that cooler temperature is still on average much higher than for instance the UK!

Whenever people visit the City of Pines, the one thing that they never forget to take back home is the local products of the city. These include vegetables, jams, choco flakes and peanut brittles. Vegetables are among the products which are the most popular in the city of Baguio. This is because a myriad of plants and fresh vegetables such as cabbages easily grow in the mild climate here.

Even with such an abundance , people tend to “hoard” vegetables to take back home. It is significant that vegetables and how they are grown in the area leans towards going organic. Baguio City’s organic vegetables are becoming more and more popular each day because they are safer, healthier and they taste better than chemically grown produce. Restaurants that serve organic vegetables are becoming more and more popular. Now, vegetables in Baguio are not just fresh, they are organic as well.

Some of the other products that the city is proud of are the popular food items that can be found on sale in the market. These include peanut brittles, choco flakes, lengua and even strawberry and ube jams. These products are what people usually buy to take home to their friends and relatives. They are easily affordable - ranging from 50 pesos to 200 pesos. When you purchase these products you can’t go wrong with the satisfaction and the taste of these unique food items.

Flowers are what Baguio takes great pride in. Since the launch of the Panagbenga or the Baguio Flower Festival in 1996, the people’s interest in the city’s flowers have grown. The yearly festival lasts throughout the month of February. During that time there is floral float parades, dancing and music including rock and pop festivals. Blizzard Entertainment last week won a default judgment worth tens of millions of dollars against the operator of an unauthorized World of Warcraft server.A U.S. District Court judge awarded Blizzard $88 million from defendant Alyson Reeves, operator of Scapegaming, according to court documents obtained by Gamasutra. Blizzard originally filed the lawsuit in October last year.

Blizzard accused Reeves of copyright infringement, unfair competition and circumvention of copyright protection systems, among other allegations. The company said Scapegaming was "well aware" that its actions were unauthorized.

The total award includes over $3 million in disgorged profits, $85.4 million in statutory damages and $64,000 in attorney's fees. Reeves had not responded to the suit, resulting in the default judgment in favor of Blizzard.

Blizzard had accused Reeves, based in the state of Georgia, of marketing and promoting Scapegaming, which allows users to access the copyrighted World of Warcraft without using official Blizzard servers, circumventing subscription fees due to the game's creators.

Operators of pirate servers can alter gameplay of copyrighted MMOs like World of Warcraft, such as allowing players to level up considerably faster than in the legitimate game. The original complaint said Scapegaming would ask for "donations" from players -- but these donations were in exchange for virtual items ranging from $1 to advance characters two levels, to $300 for a pack that included a collection of rare items.

The judge's order said Blizzard "submitted satisfactory evidence from third-party PayPal Inc. showing that Defendant’s PayPal account received $3,052,339 in gross revenues."

The order also said that Blizzard submitted satisfactory evidence that showed Reeves' website (Scapegaming.com, currently down) hosted 32,000 users on a given day in June 2008. That same month, there were over 427,000 members of the Scapegaming community, and Reeves, who goes by a number of aliases including "Peyton," said that 40,000 people play on Scapegaming's servers every day.

The court took the size of the community, 427,000, and multiplied that figure by $200 "per act of circumvention" of a copyright security system, and came to the statutory damages amount of over $85 million. It's unclear if Reeves, who didn't respond to the suit, would be able to pay the award to fulfillment, or if the defendant would appeal the ruling.
